Attached is a photo of my father, Charley Wells aboard the SS Selma City sometime
around 1934-35 and a picture taken looking out to the bow of the ship. I also
attached a page from his diary listing the crew members at that time.
My father, Charley Wells was an Ordinary Seaman on the SS Selma City on a voyage
around the world from New York to New Orleans starting in November of 1934
through March of 1935. The cargo was scrap metal. The ship visited ports in
Japan, China, Egypt, Peru, India and Algeria.
After his time on the Selma City, he became a game warden and served in the
10th Mountain Division in mountain combat in Italy receiving the Bronze Star
and Purple Heart medals.
